quote unquote

I want to wash when I meet a poet.

They’re Reds, addicts,
all delinquents.
What you write is rot.

Mr Hines says so, and he’s a schoolteacher,
he ought to know.
Go and find work.

I'm not looking it up, promise, that's What the Chairman Told Tom, title something like that, right? Pickard's still alive, by the way, I have some of his newer books ...

And, by the way, since you have a job, get another one! You poets ...

that's absolutely right, john. one of my favorite short poems by bunting. the poem dropped in to my mind yesterday as i was thinking about poetry and work, the sort of work we do to pay the mortgage and buy food, and how working for a profit -- including the work done by the vast many who labor for a wage to create the profits for a few -- is looked upon as perhaps the only legitimate sort of work there is, and without getting all goofy and shit, how the creation of any art that is not done for profit is looked at with a slant toward the pursuit itself is rather silly. it's all about getting paid, boyz! right?!

pickard is a fantastic poet, one of my favorites.
